Early Christians observe the Lenten season withdeep prayer in preparation for the Easter resurrection. Over time the church developed the custom of inviting its members to a time of reflection (Penitence) and abstention (Fasting). In our present church we do more than just reflection and abstention. We make it more practical by sacrificing something of ourselves to benefit the needs of others. For example, providing food for the hungry, clothes for the naked and help with prescription drugs.
Henri J. M. Nouwen in his book, With Open Hands reminds us that “In the silence of prayer you can spread out your hands to embrace nature, God and your fellowman. For this reason, every prayer is an expression of hope.”We take the time to pray for our times because we are a people of hope.
It is my prayer that throughout this season of penitence we would have embraced God in our daily living. Pray for each other, especially those who do not know God.
May the resurrection of Easter take on new meaning for us in uncertain times. Let the love of God be your guide in all that you do in this life.
